Although there are many fad diets out there, fad diets are a bad idea. You may achieve weight loss using them. The chances of keeping the weight off aren’t likely. So before you consider a fad diet for losing weight, consider these tips.
Chances are you have experienced the frustration of dieting at least once in your life if you have problems with your weight. Obesity is a chronic problem in our society that goes far beyond appearance.
You may have fallen for one or more of the weight loss diets over the years, promising quick and painless weight loss. Many of these quick weight loss diet programs undermine your health, cause physical discomfort, flatulence, and ultimately lead to disappointment when you start regaining weight, shortly after losing it.
Close to a hundred million Americans go on a weight loss diet in any given year and up to ninety-five percent of them regain the weight they lose within five years. Worse, a third will gain back more weight than they lost, in danger of “yo-yoing” from one popular diet to another.
The conventional approach to weight loss issues is to focus on fad weight-loss diets that take the weight off too quickly or weight loss drugs. Both may leave you with just as much weight and the additional burden of ill health.
Today, an estimated sixty-five percent of all American adults are obese or overweight. The irony is that our culture obsesses about staying thin even as we grow fatter. Healthy weight loss isn’t about appearances though.
Obesity is known to be a precursor to many debilitating health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and gallbladder disease. Obesity contributes to as many as 375,000 deaths every year.
In addition, the public health costs for obesity are staggering. According to researchers at Harvard University, obesity is a factor in 19% of all cases of heart disease with annual health costs estimated at 30 billion dollars; it’s also a factor in 57% of diabetes cases, with health costs of $9 billion per year.
If you want to lose weight and keep it off, the first step is to determine why you want to lose weight. Being at a healthy weight brings lots of health benefits. It’s not enough to want to look good, you want to feel good as well. Losing weight can bring you benefits like lots of energy.
If you do decide that you want to lose weight, the next step is to set realistic goals. You didn’t gain weight overnight. You won’t lose it overnight. Setting realistic goals will make it easier to stay on track.
Third, consider how you eat. Are you eating mindlessly? Are you eating things only because they’re healthy, not because you’re hungry for them?
Fad or quick weight loss diet programs generally overstress one type of food. They contravene the fundamental principle of good nutrition – to remain healthy one must consume a balanced diet, which includes a variety of foods. Safe, healthy, and permanent weight reduction is what’s truly lost among the thousands of popular diets available.
Listen to your body. Your body knows what you need and how much you need to eat in order to be healthy. Take your time when eating. Actually take the time to chew your food and taste it. When you thoroughly chew your food, you have a good chance of avoiding heartburn. You’ll give your body time to signal you that you’re actually full and it’s time to stop eating.
Some of the weight loss diets reigns supreme briefly, only to fade out. While some wane from popularity due to being unproductive or unsafe, some simply lose the public’s curiosity. Examples of such fad diets include the South Beach Diet, Atkins diet, the Grapefruit diet, Cabbage Soup diet, the Rotation diet, Beverly Hills diet, Breatharian, Ornish Plan the list goes on.
Remember, these fad diets advocate a specific technique (such as eliminating a certain food or eating only certain combinations of foods) in conjunction with the basic idea that the body makes up the difference in energy by breaking down and utilizing some part of itself, essentially converting matter into energy. This self-cannibalism, or catabolism as it is referred to, typically starts with the breakdown of stored body fat.
Although it’s not glamorous, eating healthy most of the time, drinking lots of water, and exercising regularly are still the best ways to lose weight.
Here are some tips to make it easier to help you lose weight more easily:
- Drink lots of water. Making sure you are properly hydrated not only helps with your digestion but also helps you determine if you’re really hungry. Often we eat instead of drinking water and we’re actually thirsty. So have a glass of water before eating. This not only helps you curb your appetite, but it may also even help you lose weight as indicated by some studies.
- I mentioned this one before, but it’s worth repeating. Chew your food thoroughly. This allows you to enjoy it, prevents heartburn, and gives your body time to signal that it’s full. You will also eat less, making it much easier to lose weight.
- Stop trying to be perfect. Aim for eating healthy about 80 percent of the time. The other 20 percent of the time you want to enjoy those foods you consider “forbidden.” A balanced diet that includes foods you love as well as foods your body needs will make it so much easier for you to stay on track with your diet.
The word “diet” includes the word die, so stay away from diets, especially fad diets. Find simple ways to include healthy food while eating foods you enjoy. Don’t forget about exercise either as this will help you speed up your metabolism and burn more calories.
